Vaccinating Introductory Psychology (VIP): Building Immunity with Research and Recommendations

Picture
Teaching during a pandemic is difficult. Teaching a large introductory course with over 100 (or 200 or 300) students or more rachets up the challenges even more. Perennial issues such as increasing student engagement, balancing skill development and content coverage, teaching inclusively, and designing authentic assessments were complicated by quick pivots to remote emergency teaching, blended, hybrid, and even hyflex approaches. Psychological science was quick to respond with measures of early remote learning helping the development of later remote teaching. As we stand poised on the brink of the end of a dark time, we can look to the Fall, armed not only with research on pandemic learning, but also with the recommendations from the American Psychological Association's Introductory Psychology Initiative. In many ways, what we learned from the pandemic may enhance how we teach in the future in general. This promise paired with the expert advice from the APA IPI stands to transform how we teach Introductory Psychology. This talk will give you a preview of this pairing.
