The Sixth Annual Psychology One Conference

Teaching Expo:
TED-Ed and Psychological Science
Nestor Matthews

Brief Description:
During the demonstration I will share how I've flipped my Psychology classroom with freely available TED-Ed technology to accomplish the following pedagogical goals. (1) Increase student engagement with course-content outside of the class. (2) Achieve broad-based participation inside the classroom. (3) Require students to distribute their practice across time, rather than “cram”. (4) More fully understand students' prior knowledge. (5) Level the playing field in students' academic preparation for each session. (6) Help students become self-directed learners, an important habit of mind. These pedagogical goals will be discussed within the context of empirically supported learning principles..
Speaker Bio:
Bio: Nestor Matthews is Professor of Psychology and the Neuroscience Program coordinator at Denison University, an entirely undergraduate residential liberal arts college. Nestor joined the Denison faculty in 2001 after completing his Ph.D. in Psychology at Brown University (1997) and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University’s Center for Neurobiology & Behavior (2001).
